Thinking about Place: Further Education Trust for Leadership in Birmingham

Marguerite Ulrich, Chief Human Resources Officer from Veolia was a welcome addition to the panel and able to share her experience as an employer. Marguerite was clear in addressing the challenge from the Chair that the private sector doesn’t have the capacity to act locally due to corporate structure – national or global.

However working in the private sector is not mutually exclusive with addressing local need. Veolia has social value targets which means engaging with local, disadvantaged communities enables access to a greater labour market.

Running a training arm too means that employing through apprenticeships is essential, but also requires collaboration with other providers to ensure that all skills needs can be addressed. For Marguerite, the key point is for employers to be clear on their workforce planning and identifying partners who can help deliver this.

Women Summit

First Women Summit 2016: Mind the (gender pay) gap – Real Business

As was suggested by Marguerite Ulrich, HR director at Veolia UK, a “motherhood penalty” means the pay gap for women in management roles over the age of 40 stands at 35 percent – more than ten percent higher than the average wages chasm between the sexes. To make matters worse, how were women ever to get out of the persistent cycle of low-paid, part-time jobs – thus enabling them to gain a better wage.

Waste management companies Veolia, FCC Environment and Viridor’s parent group Pennon are among the signatories to a commitment to “attract more diverse and inclusive talent” across the utilities and energy sectors. Launched by the Energy & Utilities…

Marguerite Ulrich, Veolia’s chief human resources officer in the UK and Ireland, said the company welcomes the initiative and the opportunities it presents.

“At Veolia we have been working towards an inclusive organization by growing diverse teams and we see it as a business imperative,” she said. “Studies have shown diversity of thought improves problem-solving, decision-making and even financial performance; we know that by leveraging our people’s differences we can drive innovative growth in our company and the industry.”

Hot Topic: Apprenticeship levy

Will the apprenticeship levy help close the UK’s skills gap? Will businesses be able to handle the extra costs?

The Autumn Statement contained a “sting in the tail” in the form of the apprenticeship levy, according to the CBI. Due to come into force in April 2017, at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s pay bill, will this measure help to close the UK’s skills gap? Will businesses be able to handle the extra tax, in addition to the National Living Wage, and will it help to improve the quality of apprenticeships?

Making veolia fit for the future

At environment services company Veolia, sustainability is core to every part of the business, even HR.

Veolia is one of those companies you don’t tend to notice, until you’re looking for it – then you start seeing it everywhere. Because the French environmental services company, which generates annual revenues of €22.3 billion, does an awful lot behind the scenes to keep the UK – and 47 other countries – in clean and working order.
